The AMCC is a first-of-its-kind AM training facility providing experiential, peer-to-peer opportunities to transfer cutting-edge, AM-specific knowledge among AM practitioners, academic and corporate researchers, and industry consortia. The AMCC presents a range of hands-on education modules over a five-day training session.
Designed Specifically for AM Training
The AMCC, host to UL’s Advanced AM training curriculum, is a 15,000 square foot facility on the campus of the University of Louisville in Kentucky. The AMCC lead instructors, Paul Bates and Ed Tackett, are recognized AM educators with a combined 40 years of experience in the field.
Hands-on Metal Instruction
Home to AM technologies, machining, metrology and powder handling equipment, the AMCC stresses the importance of safety in AM to small class sizes, enabling student interaction and experiential learning. The facility’s primary course, Advanced Training on Metal Part Production, highlights the end-to-end application of AM with metal powder systems. The course is available in public, private and custom training options.
The AMCC’s unique approach ensures students experience every step within the metal AM process. Through guided exercises and hands-on activities, students run up to four builds from design set up, process safety, plate leveling, and machine configuration to material handling, part build and removal, post processing and quality assurance. The AMCC experience is designed to provide learnings you can immediately apply to your own AM operation.

Ed Tackett, Director of Educational Programs
Ed Tackett is a nationally recognized educator in the AM field. Previously the director of The RapidTech Center at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, Tackett leverages over 20 years in additive manufacturing training and education. Ed is instrumental in leading the AMCC in the development and delivery of its curriculum.
Paul Bates, Lead AM Development Engineer
Paul Bates is an industry-recognized AM veteran. Bates joined UL in 2014 after serving 20+ years at Reebok where he guided the global athletic footwear leader’s Additive Manufacturing Lab and 3D CAD Team as the Director of Advanced Process Engineering. A 2012 recipient of the Additive Manufacturing User Group (AMUG) “Dinosaur” Award, Bates is fluent in numerous AM processes, including SLS, FDM, and PolyJet. In addition to teaching the Advanced Metals curriculum at the AMCC, Paul is the lead instructor for UL’s multi-tiered AM Training Program and supports the UL AM Facility Safety Management services.
