Batteries

Services for small batteries.

Mobile devices have become essential tools for business and leisure, and the safety, efficiency and reliability of the batteries that power portable products are key to the continuing growth of this market. UL’s established expertise in safety science and over 30 years of experience in battery performance testing help the industry foster innovation and boost confidence in battery quality. We test batteries to UL Standards and many key international, national and regional regulations, including:

  • UL 1642 Lithium Cell
  • UL 2054 Alkaline Cell or Lithium/Alkaline Packs
  • UL 1989 Standby Batteries
  • UL/CSA/IEC 60950 (may be evaluated in conjunction with UL 2054)
  • UL/CSA/IEC 60065 (batteries used in audio and video equipment)
  • IEC 60086-1 and IEC 60086-2 Nonrechargeable Performance
  • IEC 60086-4 Nonrechargeable Lithium
  • IEC 60086-5 Nonrechargeable Alkaline
  • IEC 61951-2 and IEC 61951-2 Performance of Rechargeable Ni-Cd or Ni-MH
  • IEC 61960 Performance of Rechargeable Lithium
  • IEC 62133 First and Second Edition Rechargeable Nickel or Lithium
  • Japan’s DENAN Ordinance Article 1 Appendix 9
  • CTIA—IEEE 1625 and 1725
  • Taiwan’s BSMI standards
  • IATA/UN DOT/UN 38.3 T1-T8 (or IEC 62281)

Our global market expertise helps battery product manufacturers gain fast, unrestricted access to the world marketplace and includes assistance in meeting the United Nation’s (UN) requirements for battery transportation as detailed in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, subsection 38.3. For mobile battery certification, UL is accredited by CTIA-The Wireless Association®, representing the wireless communications industry, as a CTIA Authorized Test Lab (CATL). We are authorized to test and certify battery products and systems—including lithium-ion battery cells and packs, chargers, and adapters—to the CTIA Battery Certification Program (IEEE 1625/ IEEE 1725). UL’s battery research and development team works closely with manufacturers, government agencies, regulators, major technology institutes and accreditation bodies to keep pace with the industry and technological advancements. We perform hazard identification research to identify potential issues in emerging technology and develop standards to assist manufacturers in bringing safer, innovative products to market. We can help manufacturers understand how their products and associated components perform under anticipated usage and various hazardous scenarios, including abuse and during discharge and charge cycles. We test critical components such as battery separators—the films that keep the anode and cathode apart while still allowing ions to flow between them—to gauge the safety and quality of the entire battery product. We can also meet customer design-specific needs with custom testing by engaging with UL’s battery experts. In addition, UL offers quality auditing, monitoring and surveillance services to help assess the integrity of the entire supply chain and to protect brand value. Our training and consultancy offerings assist manufacturers to manage risk and meet regulatory demands.
