Europe’s FEMB organization has launched a multi-attribute sustainability for office furniture in Europe.  Similar to the BIFMA’s level Certification program, Europe’s level Certification evaluates the environmental and social sustainability of office furniture products, but is tailored to the European market.  The program provides a common European path and methodology to give end users additional information to make evaluate products and make comparisons.

To achieve certification the product, the facility or facilities that produced it, and the organization itself, are all evaluated against sustainability criteria in the four impact areas of Materials, Energy & Atmosphere, Human & Ecosystem Health, and Social Responsibility.  To achieve certification, products must meet minimum performance against prerequisites in each impact area plus a minimum number of additional credits in each area.  The total number of points that product achieves will result in certification at one of the three levels:

  • level 1 – 32-44 points
  • level 2 – 45-62 points
  • level 3 – 63-94 points

In order to achieve level Certification, a manufacturer must work with an authorized, independent third-party certification body, such as UL, to perform the certification.  Companies that do not use authorized third-party certifiers are not eligible to use the certification mark.

Level Certification benefits both manufacturers and end users by helping to simplify decision making and sustainable product selection.  Europe has multiple office furniture sustainability standards, which can be costly for manufacturers looking to enter multiple markets, and confusing for end users selecting and comparing products.  While level Certification will not replace national schemes, it establishes a common European path and methodology to demonstrate the environmental characteristics of a product in a common way.  This benefits end users by making it comparisons easier.
