Continuous improvement helps us comprehensively address the primary quality issues confronting the healthcare industry: high costs, preventable errors, highly stressful work environments and patient dissatisfaction.

Our services for the healthcare industry utilize the core principles that guide UL’s approach: Align—Enable—Empower. We help leaders align their organizations toward a common goal to create a culture of continuous improvement. We enable transformation by helping develop internal improvement capabilities. We empower people by providing the coaching for creating systems for ongoing improvement.

We typically begin with an assessment of an organization to develop a customized improvement plan. During the assessment, UL’s knowledge experts will evaluate value streams and identify non-value-added activities and waste, leveraging tools such as value stream mapping, time analysis, process metrics, corrective and preventive action (CAPA) processes, and complaint management best practices.

UL’s continuous improvement advisory services enable an organization to develop reliable systems in which the focus is shifted to value-added activities that take full advantage of healthcare professionals’ skillsets. Eliminating unnecessary “busy work” allows clinicians to devote more time to supporting what patients value most: providing necessary clinical care when and where it is needed while keeping the patient and family informed in the process. A better process overall means a better experience for both patients and employees with less cost.

We help develop internal organizational capability with advisors available on a per-project basis and via training including Shingo Prize, Discover: Principles of Operational Excellence and Strategy Deployment workshops; and UL Lean Six Sigma certification courses that focus on the practical application of Lean Philosophy and helping people build continuous improvement skills.
