You may have read some communications from UL about furniture tip-over and the damage it can have on your brand reputation. Or you’ve seen stories in the news about real-world examples of items such as dressers tipping over, either trapping children, and on some instances, causing deaths. These safety risks continue to negatively affect the furniture industry and this blog post serves to bring more awareness to the issue.

Data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is readily available and continues to highlight an increasing number of recalls. The reports show recalled dressers are unstable, posing risks such as tip-over and entrapment of children. The CPSC lists instructions from manufacturers such as, “Consumers should immediately stop using any recalled chest that is not properly anchored to the wall and place it into an area that children cannot access.”

Outdoor furniture is included in the latest recall data, as patio chairs pose risks of breaking, causing falls and injuries, and again, consumers are warned to immediately stop using the recalled products.

UL is committed to sharing information on critical issues facing the residential furniture industry. Stay on top of this news by joining our Furnishings Focus LinkedIn group.
